Rigid PCB Assembly Process: From SMT Placement to Final Testing
2026/08/28
After a rigid PCB is fabricated, the next stage is PCB assembly, where electronic components are mounted, soldered, inspected, and tested to produce a functional electronic assembly.
Although the exact manufacturing flow depends on the product, most rigid PCB assembly projects follow a standardized production process that combines automated equipment with quality inspection.
Step 1 — Solder Paste Printing

The first assembly step is applying solder paste through a precision stencil onto the PCB pads.
This ensures that surface-mount components can be accurately soldered during the reflow process.
Step 2 — SMT Component Placement

Automatic pick-and-place machines position electronic components onto the PCB with high speed and precision.
This stage is particularly important for boards containing large numbers of SMD components.
Step 3 — Reflow Soldering

The PCB passes through a reflow oven where controlled heating melts the solder paste and permanently connects SMT components to the board.
A stable temperature profile helps ensure consistent solder joints.
Step 4 — AOI Inspection

Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) verifies:
- Component placement
- Solder joint quality
- Missing components
- Alignment accuracy
AOI allows production defects to be detected early in the manufacturing process.
Step 5 — Through-Hole Assembly

Components requiring through-hole mounting are inserted after the SMT process.
These components are commonly used in connectors, transformers, switches, and other mechanical parts.
Step 6 — Wave or Selective Soldering

Through-hole components are soldered using an appropriate process, such as:
- Wave soldering
- Selective soldering
- Manual soldering (when required)
The selected method depends on the product requirements.
Step 7 — Cleaning

After soldering, residues and contaminants are removed to improve board cleanliness and prepare the assembly for subsequent inspection or coating when required.
Step 8 — Electrical Testing

Testing verifies that the assembled PCB performs as expected.
Depending on the project, testing may include:
- Flying Probe Testing
- Functional Testing
- Electrical Testing
These tests help identify manufacturing issues before shipment.
Step 9 — Final Inspection

Before delivery, the completed assembly undergoes final quality inspection to confirm:
- Component installation
- Solder quality
- Board appearance
- Overall manufacturing quality
Why PCB Assembly Quality Matters
Consistent PCB assembly improves:
- Product reliability
- Electrical performance
- Manufacturing consistency
- Long-term durability
For industrial control equipment, communication devices, computer hardware, and electronic instruments, a controlled assembly process is an important part of overall product quality.
