PCBA Turnaround: What Happens at Each Step of Your Order
When engineers send Gerber files and a BOM to a PCB assembly partner, one of the first questions is: what happens next, and how long will it take? This article walks through each stage of a standard PCB and PCBA order at Huayihai, with the standard lead times confirmed for production.
Step 1: Engineering File Review (2–5 Working Days)
Every order begins with a review of the customer's Gerber files, BOM, and technical specifications. During this stage, the engineering team checks that the manufacturing data is complete and consistent, and confirms key requirements such as surface finish, special processes, and testing needs. Standard file review takes 2–5 working days depending on project complexity. Complete and consistent files help keep this stage short.
Step 2: PCB Fabrication (3–5 Working Days)
Once the files are confirmed, PCB production begins. Huayihai manufactures boards from 2 to 64 layers, with capabilities including HDI stack-ups up to 2+n+2, impedance control, and specialized processes such as copper paste via plugging and gold fingers. Both prototype and volume PCB orders have a standard lead time of 3–5 working days.
Step 3: Component Preparation and Verification
For PCBA orders, components are prepared according to the approved BOM and verified before assembly. Starting assembly with the correct, verified materials prevents downstream delays and rework.
Step 4: PCBA Assembly and Inspection (3–5 Working Days)
Assembly includes SMT placement with nitrogen reflow soldering, and through-hole assembly using wave, selective wave, or DIP processes where the design requires them. Inspection runs alongside assembly: solder paste is checked with 3D SPI before reflow, and completed assemblies pass AOI and X-ray inspection, which covers hidden joints such as BGA. Standard lead time for PCBA samples and small batches is 3–5 working days.
Step 5: Electrical Testing and Final Inspection
After assembly, boards undergo 100% electrical testing using flying probe or dedicated test fixtures to confirm electrical performance according to customer requirements. A final inspection is completed before packing and shipment.
Planning Your Project Timeline
A few practical points help keep an order on schedule: send complete files (Gerber data, BOM, and technical specifications); confirm special process requirements (via plugging, gold fingers, surface finish) at the quotation stage; and treat the lead times above as standard working-day estimates for standard orders. For projects with special materials or complex builds, the engineering team will confirm the schedule during file review.
